THE RIVER
«The River» is a collaborative project between Israeli-born alto saxophonist Tevet Sela and Canadian jazz pianist John Roney. Each artist has a strong identity as a leader and musical visionary, and the combination of their efforts is even greater than the sum of its parts. Through 10 original compositions, the duo explores the blending of musical cultures from the Middle East, Europe, and North America to create a sound that is truly unique. Klezmer ornamentations, North African rhythms, European Classical textures, Jazz improvisation and Groove all flow together effortlessly as this exciting duo navigates new uncharted musical waters. Their fearless improvisations and open-minded musicality make every note honest and spontaneous, engaging the listener at every bend and turn. As The River flows, it connects together our distant lands and welcomes us all to revel in its strength and beauty.

«The River» est un projet collaboratif entre le saxophoniste israélien Tevet Sela et le pianiste canadien John Roney. Chaque artiste a une identité forte en tant que leader et visionnaire musical, et la combinaison de leurs efforts est encore plus grande que la somme de ses parties. Avec 10 compositions originales, le duo explore le mélange de cultures musicales du Moyen-Orient, d’Europe et d’Amérique du Nord pour créer un son vraiment unique. BIO
John Roney - He is without a doubt one of today’s most gifted pianists. He excels in countless musical genres including jazz, classical, popular music, opera and contemporary music. His experience and expertise have garnered him the respect of both the local jazz community, and that of Canada’s most iconic artists - Ranee Lee, Ginette Reno, Alain Caron, and classical soprano Natalie Choquette, Jazzlab Orchestra. Having led his own projects since 1996, John has four albums to his credit, and has been featured as a soloist or sideman on over 30 commercial recordings. Hi efforts have garnered him many prizes and accolades including three nominations for his 3rd album ‘Silverbirch’, at the 2010 Juno and the Quebec l’ADISQ awards. His composition ‘Choices’ earned John the Prix Galaxie de Composition for his performance at the 2011 Festival international de jazz de Montréal. He has toured all over the world with various artists and with his own projects. He teaches at CEGEP Marie Victorin and at Montréal University. He received his Master’s degree in 2003 at McGill University. John is a Korg Canada Artist and clinician.

Tevet Sela - He was 12 he began playing the saxophone and his interest in Jazz started to grow. At the age of 16 he started to compose his own music and began his professional musical career. Since Since then, he has quickly become a musician asked. Tevet, who is also a graduate of the prestigious Thelma Yelin School of Arts, has toured in France and the Netherlands as it’s big band featured soloist. In addition, Tevet holds a Diploma in music education, and has over the years won several scholarships of the America-Israel cultural fund. Tevet has enjoyed the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s endorsement on several projects such as representing Israel in an international UNICEF benefit concert. In the year 2000 Tevet established his own band and started to record and perform his original compositions. In the spring of 2003 Tevet’s debut album ‘Tevet Sela’ was released and followed by a tour in international jazz festivals and venues, both in Israel and abroad. Tevet’s live concerts generate interest and enthusiasm by both European and Israeli audience. His music is frequently played by radio stations around the world including the BBC Radio, and leading Jazz stations in the USA. The debut album was nominated for the ‘jazz album of the year’ and the ‘jazz composition of the year’ awards at the JPF Music Awards 2006. Tevet released his second cd entitled ‘Coming True’ in 2007. The album was recorded in a quartet setting and continues the adventurous spirit of Tevet’s debut album but with a more jazz-funk flavor to it. It displays Tevet’s evolving writing, arranging and producing abilities. Again this album had gained a lot of exposure and Tevet’s quartet toured and performed in supporting of this album. In January 2010 Tevet has brought to life yet another refreshing musical project in his third release ‘Jazz flute’. Soon after its release, the album became one of the best iTunes sellers in its category. Today Tevet live in Montreal and played with his great quartet.
